Children and War

Traumatic events children may have experienced during disaster/war

• Forced to leave village or town

• Home destroyed

• Separation from family

• Parents separated from each other because of the disaster

• Family member in a hospital following disaster

• Family member injured or killed

• Experience horror, shelling or shooting at a very close distance

• Have to stay outside time because of the possibility for new earthquakes

• So cold that child thought he/she would die

• So hungry  that child thought he/she would die

• Saw people who had been recently injured

• Saw someone die or being killed

• Saw a dead body or bodies

• Helped to carry wounded or dead people

• Injured during the disaster or war

• In a situation where thought he/she would die

• Trapped inside a building
• Expelled from child’s home
• Home shelled
• Soldiers or armed men forcibly enter child’s home
• Family member in a detention camp during the war
• Family member goes to the front line to fight
• Shot at by snipers
• Have to stay in a basement for a long time because of shelling
• Held in a detention camp during the war
• Saw someone being tortured
• Saw someone being raped or sexually abused in the war
• Saw many people being killed at once
• Used as a human shield by soldiers
• Someone directly threaten to kill the child during the war
