Grant

The Foundation was established to promote and support research concerning the short and long-term effects and the consequences of war, war-like situations and disasters on children and their families. Over the years, we have supported a number of projects and their findings.

Each year, the Board votes an amount of money that can be awarded to various projects. We usually support 2 or 3 small projects and one large one. The maximum amount we give is US$20,000 to cover expenses of a project for up to three years long (ie a total of US$ 20,000, not for each year). Smaller projects can add considerably to our understanding of the effects of war and disasters on children and their families.

We are pleased to fund pilot studies that can later be presented to larger grant giving bodies. We are also prepared to co-fund larger studies up to our maximum.

We try to keep the administration and bureaucracy surrounding a project to the minimum. However, we have to account for all the funding. So applications can be made (only electronically) at any time. We ask for the following information:

  • Name of applicant (with brief cv)
  • Contact Details
  • Title of project
  • Timeline of project
  • Brief statement of the aims and methodology of the project
  • Proposed timetable
  • Amount requested
  • Detailed budget
  • Names of any other funders being approached
  • Evidence of cooperation from stakeholders

It is the applicant’s responsibility to obtain appropriate research ethics approval before any project is started. We may wish to see the information sheets given to participants and the type of consent and assent requested.

Please note, in keeping with the rules of other similar charities, we do not pay any overheads to academic institution or other employers.

When a proposal is received by the Chair, it will be acknowledged as soon as possible. A Board Member will be assigned to see the application through to a decision. Any immediate queries will be sent back send should be answered within a week. Then the proposal will be evaluated by referee(s). A decision will be reached normally within three months from the date of the proposal submission.

When a proposal is approved, an award letter is sent out and the applicant will have to submit details of the bank account to which funds should be sent before the project can begin. We normally send half the award on approval and the remainder on receipt of an acceptable final report. The award letter spells this out in detail.

Applications should be sent to: w.yule@iop.kcl.ac.uk or atle@uib.no.
